The exchange didn’t spiral into arrest or detention. There were no handcuffs. No trespass warning. No removal from the building. But there was tension. Anyone who has stood in a government building holding a camera understands that tension. The moment when authority figures decide how they’re going to handle you. The moment when you decide how you’re going to handle them.

Eventually, a supervising sergeant stepped in. This part matters. The sergeant handled the situation professionally. Calmly. Directly. There was no dramatic showdown. No constitutional lecture battle. Just clarification.

And here’s the part that matters most: I apologized for my tone.

That moment is easy to overlook. It’s not flashy. It won’t generate outrage clips. But it’s real. Rights matter. So does accountability. If I cross the line socially while remaining within the law legally, I can still own that.

The law was never truly the issue inside that courthouse. The tension was. That distinction is important.

Most visits to government offices are painfully boring.

You walk in, take a number, sit in an uncomfortable chair, stare at a wall for ten minutes, and leave wondering why the entire process couldn’t have been an email. That’s exactly the kind of visit I was expecting when I walked into the Lauderdale Lakes WIC Center.

Instead, it turned into a front-row seat for a familiar but still troubling phenomenon: someone asserting authority they don’t actually have, simply because they don’t like being recorded.

A Normal Looking Place With Clear Rules

The Lauderdale Lakes WIC Center sits in a strip shopping plaza. No gates. No security checkpoint. No “secure facility” warnings plastered on the windows. Just a public-facing government office doing what public-facing government offices are supposed to do.

Inside, the layout was straightforward. A public lobby with seating. Doors leading further into the building. And importantly, clear signage marking where the public was and wasn’t allowed to go.

The restricted areas were clearly labeled. The signs didn’t mince words. They simply stated that access beyond certain doors was restricted.

What those signs did not say was equally important.

There were no notices about photography. No “no recording” symbols. No policies posted. No vague warnings about “security concerns.” Nothing.

That matters more than people realize. In public spaces, especially government spaces, restrictions aren’t assumed. They have to be stated. Clearly.

The Confrontation Starts Immediately

The moment I walked through the front door, I was met by a security guard stationed just inside the lobby. His name is Jack Martinez. He was in uniform, visibly armed, and positioned in a way that made it clear he was meant to be the first point of contact.

I was already recording when I entered. One camera mounted to my chest. Another in my hand. No attempt to hide it. No attempt to be sneaky.

Jack noticed instantly.

What started as a brief interaction turned tense almost immediately. His demeanor changed the moment it became clear I wasn’t there to quietly sit down and wait without asking questions.

Instead of explaining a policy or asking what I needed, he began issuing commands.

“Stand right there.”

No explanation. No courtesy. No effort to de-escalate.

Just commands.

When Commands Replace Communication

There’s a noticeable difference between someone doing their job and someone reacting emotionally. You can usually hear it in the tone.

Jack wasn’t trying to inform me of anything. He wasn’t trying to clarify what was allowed or not allowed. He was trying to control the situation.

As the interaction continued, the language escalated.

He threatened to trespass me. He threatened to charge me. At one point, he threatened to “lock me up.”

Those aren’t small statements. They aren’t misunderstandings. They are explicit assertions of arrest authority.

And yet, not once did he explain how recording in a public lobby violated any law. Not once did he cite a policy. Not once did he reference a statute or regulation.

The threats were loud. The legal foundation was nonexistent.

The “Retired Police Officer” Card

At the peak of the confrontation, Jack made a point to say that he was a retired police officer.

That statement wasn’t made casually. It wasn’t part of a conversation about his background. It was clearly intended to establish dominance, to suggest that his authority extended beyond his role as a contracted security guard.

But here’s the thing.

Being a retired police officer doesn’t grant arrest authority. It doesn’t create special powers. And it certainly doesn’t override constitutional protections in a public government lobby.

Authority doesn’t follow you into retirement.

And it doesn’t magically appear because someone claims it does.

Staff Step In, Reality Creeps Back

As the situation unfolded, WIC staff began to intervene. A supervisor named Alyssa, along with at least two other employees, addressed what was happening.

This is where the narrative changed.

Staff confirmed that:

• The lobby was open to the public

• Recording was allowed

• There was no policy prohibiting filming in that space

In other words, everything Jack had been objecting to was perfectly lawful.

At that point, there should have been a reset. A simple acknowledgment. A step back.

Instead, while Jack did not escalate further physically, the verbal tension lingered. The threats stopped growing, but the attitude didn’t fully shift.

It wasn’t about the rules anymore. It was about pride.

No Arrest, No Trespass, No Police

Despite all the talk of arrest and trespassing, none of it happened.

I was never detained. My equipment was never touched. No police officers were called. No paperwork was produced. No supervisor ordered me to leave.

That outcome speaks louder than the threats ever did.

When someone truly has authority on their side, they don’t need to bluff. They don’t need to posture. They simply act within the law.

Here, the law was on my side, and the confrontation quietly fizzled once that reality became unavoidable.

Armed Security and the Illusion of Authority

Encounters like this raise a bigger issue that shows up again and again in public buildings.

Armed security guards often operate in a gray area. They wear uniforms. They carry firearms. They’re placed in government spaces. And to the average person, that looks a lot like law enforcement.

But looks aren’t law.

Security guards, even armed ones, do not have the same authority as police officers. Their role is limited. Observe. Deter. Report.

They do not get to invent rules. They do not get to override constitutional rights. And they do not get to threaten arrest for lawful activity.

A badge, a uniform, or a holstered firearm does not expand legal authority.

Why Filming Matters

It would be easy to brush this off as one bad interaction. But that misses the point.

Most people would have stopped recording the moment the threats started. Not because they were wrong, but because the situation felt uncomfortable, intimidating, or not worth the hassle.

That’s exactly why documenting these encounters matters.

Not to provoke. Not to embarrass. But to create an objective record of how authority is exercised when someone thinks no one is watching.

When cameras are rolling, the truth has a way of surfacing.

Leaving by Choice, Not Force

Eventually, I chose to leave. Not because I was required to. Not because I was trespassed. But because the interaction had run its course and the point had been made.

No one stopped me. No one followed me. Jack said nothing as I exited.

Once back in the car, it was clear the situation was over.

The Pattern Is the Point

This wasn’t a fluke. It fits a pattern that plays out across the country.

Someone records in a public space.

Someone in a position of perceived authority objects.

Threats are made.

No law is cited.

Supervisors intervene.

The threats disappear.

The only difference from one location to another is how long it takes for reality to catch up.

Accountability Starts With Visibility

This video, and this post, aren’t about personal attacks. They’re about accountability.

Government agencies have a responsibility to ensure that their employees and contractors understand the limits of their authority. When that training fails, the public pays the price.

Visibility is often the only corrective.

Public Filming Raises Questions at Boca Raton Post Office

Some places you drive past for decades without ever really noticing. They blend into the background of daily life, tucked just far enough off the main road that they never demand your attention. That was exactly the case with the Boca Rio branch of the United States Postal Service in Boca Raton, Florida. Despite living in the area for more than thirty years, I had never stepped foot inside this particular post office.

That changed on this visit.

What unfolded inside wasn’t dramatic in the Hollywood sense. There were no raised voices from staff, no security rushing in, no police response. Instead, what happened was something far more revealing: a series of ordinary interactions that exposed how uncomfortable public photography still makes some people, even inside a government building where the rules are clearly posted.

And that discomfort is where the real story lives.

A Camera Changes the Room

The moment a camera comes out, the energy of a space shifts. People who were previously minding their own business suddenly become alert. Some get curious. Others get nervous. A few become openly irritated.

That pattern repeated itself almost immediately inside the Boca Rio post office.

Customers waited in line to mail packages and pick up mail. Postal workers moved through their routines. Everything was normal—until it wasn’t. A woman approached me and asked what I was filming for. Her concern wasn’t subtle. She made it clear she didn’t want to be recorded.

That reaction is common, and it’s worth pausing on.

Many people believe that feeling uncomfortable automatically creates a right to stop someone else from filming. It doesn’t. Discomfort is not the same thing as illegality. Inside this post office, the rules governing photography are literally posted on the wall for anyone to read.

When I pointed to those rules—Poster 7—the conversation shifted. The objection wasn’t backed by policy. It was backed by personal preference.

And personal preference doesn’t override the First Amendment.

Curiosity vs. Confrontation

Not every interaction that day was tense. In fact, most weren’t.

Several customers simply wanted to know what I was doing. One asked out of genuine curiosity. Another thanked me after hearing the explanation. These moments matter because they show something important: most people aren’t hostile to public filming once they understand it.

The problem is that understanding doesn’t always come first.

A camera triggers assumptions. People imagine worst‑case scenarios. They think someone is being targeted, exposed, or harassed, even when none of that is happening. That gap between perception and reality is where misunderstandings start.

The role of postal staff became especially important here.

When Staff Gets It Right

At one point, a woman asked whether recording was allowed. Rather than escalating the situation or pushing the question aside, a male postal worker addressed the entire line.

He explained—clearly and calmly—that the post office is a public building. Anyone can come in, ask questions, conduct business, and yes, record. His message was simple: let people do what they’re allowed to do, and let staff do their jobs.

That brief explanation defused the tension.

It also demonstrated something that doesn’t always happen in these situations: a government employee actually understanding and applying the policy correctly.

That deserves recognition.

Too often, confusion about filming rights comes from the very people tasked with enforcing rules. Here, the opposite happened. The staff member knew the policy and didn’t let personal discomfort dictate enforcement.

That’s how it should work.

Poster 7 and Public Conduct

Inside every post office, Poster 7 outlines the rules and regulations governing conduct on postal property. It covers behavior, not feelings. It sets boundaries, not preferences.

Photography is not prohibited.

The issue isn’t that the rules are unclear. The issue is that many people—customers and employees alike—have never actually read them.

That gap in knowledge leads to unnecessary confrontations. People assume filming must be forbidden because it feels intrusive. But the law doesn’t operate on feelings.

Public buildings exist for public use. Transparency is part of that.

A Familiar Face from YouTube

Not all moments inside the post office were about education or policy. One interaction took a lighter turn when a man approached and joked that he recognized me from YouTube.

That man was Moses, a locksmith who also runs his own channel. We exchanged cards, talked briefly about content creation, and went our separate ways.

It was a reminder that public spaces are exactly that—shared spaces where all kinds of interactions happen. Cameras don’t erase that. If anything, they document it.

Why Some Viewers See Me Walk Away

Toward the end of the video, I addressed something long‑time viewers have noticed.

In many past audits, you’ve seen me walk away the moment an officer threatens arrest. Some people interpret that as backing down. Others accuse me of folding too easily.

What those viewers didn’t see was the legal reality behind those choices.

Every video on this channel up until now was filmed while I was on felony probation. That meant even a minor misdemeanor—something as small as trespassing after warning—could result in jail without bond and a probation violation.

In that context, restraint isn’t weakness. It’s survival.

There were moments where self‑defense would have been legally justified. There were moments where standing my ground physically would have felt right. But when you’re on probation, the arrest alone can carry consequences measured in years, not months.

That’s the part most people don’t factor in when they watch a clip online.

Turning the Page

That chapter is now closed.

I’m no longer on probation. And moving forward, the legal trap that shaped earlier decisions is gone.

The restraint viewers saw before wasn’t fear. It was discipline.

What comes next will look different.

That doesn’t mean reckless behavior. It means accountability without artificial limitations. It means asserting rights without having to weigh whether a wrongful arrest could derail years of progress.

The Customer’s Call

This one was almost sad. The customer’s voice was frantic. She said she was “afraid” and kept repeating that what I was doing was “so strange.” She even admitted she filmed me with her own phone. Her fear was real — but fear doesn’t make filming illegal.

When you walk up to Coral Springs City Hall, it’s hard to miss the massive sun sculpture out front. Painted bright orange and yellow, it beams like Florida sunshine, welcoming everyone who steps inside. Etched on the inside of the sculpture are the words: “Everything Under the Sun.”

That’s Coral Springs’ motto, and it couldn’t have been a more fitting way to open this audit. Because when we’re talking about the First Amendment — the right to speak, record, and hold government accountable — we’re really talking about everything under the sun.

This was meant to be one big video covering Coral Springs City Hall, the police department, the local post offices, and the Northwest Regional Library. But as these things often go, the day’s events reshaped the project. The library footage had enough drama to earn its own release (and if you haven’t seen it yet, you can catch that here). The post office interactions — which include police being called and 911 audio where callers lied — will be next week’s feature.

Today’s story is all about City Hall and the Police Department — two sides of Coral Springs government that, as it turns out, set the bar high for professionalism and transparency.

Checking In at City Hall

The main entrance of Coral Springs City Hall feels more like a corporate lobby than a government office. Off to the left sits a security station manned by an Allied guard. A lot of auditors will tell you Allied Security has a reputation for mishandling First Amendment situations. But this guy? He was polite and professional from the start.

I asked where the building department was, and he told me to head to the “One Stop Shop” through the next door. He even buzzed me in.

Inside, I found myself standing in front of a kiosk that immediately asked for my phone number. That’s where my radar went up. Why should I have to hand over personal info just to access public services? I wasn’t about to feed my data into another system that could open me up to more spam calls.

Instead, I approached the desk, where I met Ashley. She asked my name and what I needed. I explained I wanted records on how many solar permits had been approved in 2025. Before long, an older staff member joined in. She asked clarifying questions — did I only want approvals, or applications too? Residential or commercial? She wasn’t defensive about the camera; she just genuinely wanted to make sure I got the right info.

When I clarified I only wanted approved residential solar permits for 2025, she assured me they could run a report. She even joked that to get the records, they’d need my driver’s license and DNA. We all laughed — it was the kind of good-natured professionalism you hope for in public service.

Ashley handled the request, double-checked the details, and confirmed I could leave my email instead of a phone number. She even made light of being on camera, asking if she looked okay. I told her the viewers were more concerned with how well she did her job than how she looked doing it.

That’s how public service should work: approachable, professional, and transparent.

Same-Day Records

Before I even left the parking lot, I pulled out my phone to check some footage — and there it was. An email from the city with my first records response.

1,305 active employees.

The very same day, I also received the full report of 2025 solar permits. If you’ve ever filed a public records request, you know how rare that is. Too often, governments drag their feet, overcomplicate the process, or try to intimidate requesters. Coral Springs, on the other hand, delivered same-day transparency. That deserves recognition.

Meeting the Deputy City Clerk

Before leaving City Hall, I circled back to the Allied guard and asked about seeing the city clerk. He asked what I needed, and I explained it was for another records request. Right at that moment, a woman called in on the video phone — clearly complaining about me recording.

The guard didn’t flinch. He told her flat-out that I had a right to film in the building. For an Allied guard to stand firm like that is worth noting. I even told him how much I appreciated the way he handled it.

A few minutes later, Deputy City Clerk Aaron came down to meet me. I asked how many employees the city had (which, unbeknownst to me, I’d already gotten the answer to). He explained that requests like that get entered into the city’s JustFOIA system, where I could track progress. I also asked about the immaculate landscaping outside — whether it was done by city employees or contracted out. He said mostly city workers, though sometimes vendors help.

Aaron was polite, professional, and efficient. Nothing more, nothing less.

Walking out of City Hall, I told the camera how smooth the entire process had been. And it really was.

Coral Springs Police Department

Next stop: the Coral Springs Police Department.

Out front, a bronze statue shows a police officer and firefighter with two children between them. Just to the right is a memorial garden for fallen officers. I cracked a quick joke about bronze prices being up but not worth stealing the statue, then made my way inside.

At the front desk, a young woman asked how she could help. I told her I wanted to file a public records request. She asked if I had a case number — I didn’t. She asked what it was related to, and that’s when I told her:

I had noticed an award in their trophy case for February 14, 2018 — the day of the Parkland school shooting.

Remembering Parkland

For context: Coral Springs is right next to Parkland, home of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. On Valentine’s Day 2018, 17 students and staff members were murdered in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

As shots rang out and children bled on the floor, deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office — the agency tasked with protecting the school — stayed outside. They didn’t go in. That’s how BSO earned the infamous nickname: “The Cowards of Broward.”

Coral Springs officers, on the other hand, ran in. They passed those hiding deputies and entered the building ready to confront the shooter.

That’s what the award in the trophy case recognized. The inscription read:

“This award is presented to the Coral Springs Police Department in recognition of your agency personnel’s decisive actions and heroic efforts on February 14, 2018, when responding to an active shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Your courageous and brave actions were instrumental in saving precious lives.”

I told the clerk that my request was for the names and email addresses of the officers who went in that day. She seemed a little uncertain, but she pulled out a notepad and began writing it down.

Filing the Requests

She explained that the main reports were with BSO, but that Coral Springs had supplemental records. Either way, their records department would handle the request. She asked for my email, which I dictated while she wrote it down.

Before leaving, I added one more request: the police blotter from the previous Sunday. She made a note of that too, confirmed everything would be submitted, and told me they’d get back to me.

I thanked her for her time and left the building.

Outside, I reflected on camera: no matter where you live in the U.S., you’ve heard of the Valentine’s Day massacre. And whatever you think of law enforcement, you have to respect the fact that Coral Springs PD ran into that school when others didn’t.

Reflection

This Coral Springs audit was unlike many others I’ve done.

At City Hall, I was met with professionalism, good humor, and transparency — including same-day records responses. At the police department, I filed sensitive requests tied to one of the darkest days in Florida history, and the staff still treated me respectfully.

That’s how government should work. Not with hostility. Not with barriers. But with accountability, professionalism, and openness.

Remembering 9/11 in Coral Springs

Before heading inside, I took some time at the September 11, 2001 memorial that sits just outside the entrance.

This isn’t just any plaque in the ground. At its center is an authentic piece of steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. After 9/11, thousands of pieces of steel were stored at JFK Airport, and in the years that followed, communities around the country applied to receive them for local memorials. Coral Springs was granted one of those pieces on October 18, 2002. By September 11, 2004, it was permanently placed at the library, surrounded by a modest but powerful memorial.

The plaque reminds visitors: “Let us never forget the innocent victims who died or were injured on that day.”

I read the words aloud on camera, pausing to let the weight of it sink in. Just as I finished, a squirrel darted into frame with a peanut in its mouth. I couldn’t resist joking that the squirrel was just trying to get a nut, and I was just trying to get a video. The juxtaposition felt oddly fitting — life goes on, even in the shadow of tragedy, and sometimes you need a moment of levity.

Words from Dr. King

Moving closer to the library’s front doors, I passed another monument — this one honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was etched with some of his most enduring quotes:

• “The time is always right to do what is right.”

• “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

• “Courage faces fear and thereby masters it.”

Reading those words before stepping inside was a reminder that civic spaces like libraries are meant to embody those ideals. They’re open to all, funded by the public, and grounded in principles of equality and access.

First Impressions Inside

It had just finished raining, and the pavement was still wet as I stepped toward the entrance. Just beside the doors was a plaque marking the building’s opening in February 2001 — just months before the world would change forever that September.

Inside, I filmed some of the artwork on display. The standout was a towering bronze-colored sculpture stretching two stories tall, inscribed with a scroll of text in English and what looked like abstract letters. Like much public art, it was open to interpretation, but it gave the lobby a sense of grandeur.

Further inside, I noticed signage in multiple languages — a reflection of Coral Springs’ diverse population, which includes large Hispanic, Brazilian, and Caribbean communities. Libraries in Broward County often serve as cultural hubs, not just book depositories, so it made sense to see information presented in different tongues.

At the front desk, I filmed a sign advertising the Instant Library Card program. The young woman working there explained that anyone can get a card — free for Broward residents, $38 annually for non-residents. It struck me as a smart way to make the library accessible even for folks outside the county, whether snowbirds, students, or frequent visitors.

Upstairs Encounters

Skipping the youth services area (I don’t film minors), I took the stairs to the second floor. At an information desk, two staff members were adjusting a bracelet. One of them smiled warmly at me and asked if I needed help. I told her she already had — her smile had lit up the room. She laughed, which gave the moment a nice human touch.

From there, I circled the perimeter where study rooms line the walls. Most people ignored me, but one young woman clearly noticed the camera. She raised her hand to block her face. Amused, I did the old “I’m squishing your head” gag with my fingers, then walked away.

That’s when things escalated.

The “Snitching” Debate

Moments later, the same woman came out of her study room and asked me to stop recording. I declined and suggested she return to studying. Instead, she marched to the information desk, phone in hand, to complain.

I even told my viewers, “I think she’s gonna go snitch.”

At the desk, there was also a man nearby. At the time, I didn’t know what role he played — he was just there while she was talking to staff. A few minutes later, I noticed him at one of the public computers, and that’s when I saw him point me out to the security guard.

Curious, I approached him to ask why. He admitted he’d done it so the guard wouldn’t have to walk around looking for me, but he added that he didn’t think I was doing anything wrong so long as I wasn’t filming kids. He even showed me an email he’d sent to the library director with photos of people sleeping in the building, explaining how staff weren’t equipped to handle mentally ill patrons. We wrapped up our conversation on that note, and I thanked him for sharing his perspective.

As I turned to head back toward the study room area, I noticed security and another staff member talking with the woman who had originally complained about me. Naturally, I wanted to capture what was being said, so I made my way over to join the conversation.

Tattling, Snitching, and Third Grade

That’s when the young woman doubled down. She claimed she had a “right not to be filmed,” insisted the camera made her uncomfortable, and even tried to argue that being a woman should grant her special protection. I reminded her bluntly that I wasn’t there to provide comfort — “I didn’t bring any pillows.”

When she said I didn’t care about other human beings, I corrected her: it’s not about lacking care for people, it’s about not sacrificing constitutional rights because someone feels uncomfortable.

From there, the discussion spiraled into what I’d call playground semantics. She didn’t like me saying she was “telling” or “snitching,” and she snapped back that she was simply “informing” on me. I pointed out that it really doesn’t matter what word you choose — telling, tattling, snitching, informing — it’s all the same thing. She rolled her eyes and shot back that my language sounded like I was stuck in third grade.

I reminded her I wasn’t the one running to the teacher.

At that point, even the staff member at the desk gently reminded her that this was a public space, and she couldn’t make me leave.

Education in Real Time

The exchange went in circles: she argued about feelings, I pointed to rights. She asked about the purpose of my video, and I explained again: it’s to educate the public about their rights to record in public spaces.

She wasn’t happy about it, but by inserting herself into the situation, she had become the most interesting part of an otherwise routine audit. I gave her my business card, explaining she could use my website if she wanted to opt out later.

Wrapping Up

Heading out, I passed a Muslim woman in traditional clothing. She walked by without incident. The irony wasn’t lost on me — unlike a previous audit where someone invoked religion to try to stop me from recording, here was someone of faith who understood that public spaces are just that: public.

The Northwest Regional Library is part of the Broward County Library system, one of the largest in the country with more than 30 branches. About the 9/11 Steel Program

After 9/11, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stored over 1,800 pieces of steel recovered from Ground Zero. In 2009, they began distributing them to communities across the U.S. that applied, usually for use in memorials. Coral Springs was among those selected. The city brands itself as the Butterfly Capital of the World, a nickname that conjures up images of quiet neighborhoods, nature preserves, and delicate wings drifting through the South Florida breeze. But compared to other audits I’ve done in Florida, Coconut Creek came out looking good.
