Most visits to government offices are painfully boring.

You walk in, take a number, sit in an uncomfortable chair, stare at a wall for ten minutes, and leave wondering why the entire process couldn’t have been an email. That’s exactly the kind of visit I was expecting when I walked into the Lauderdale Lakes WIC Center.

Instead, it turned into a front-row seat for a familiar but still troubling phenomenon: someone asserting authority they don’t actually have, simply because they don’t like being recorded.

A Normal Looking Place With Clear Rules

The Lauderdale Lakes WIC Center sits in a strip shopping plaza. No gates. No security checkpoint. No “secure facility” warnings plastered on the windows. Just a public-facing government office doing what public-facing government offices are supposed to do.

Inside, the layout was straightforward. A public lobby with seating. Doors leading further into the building. And importantly, clear signage marking where the public was and wasn’t allowed to go.

The restricted areas were clearly labeled. The signs didn’t mince words. They simply stated that access beyond certain doors was restricted.

What those signs did not say was equally important.

There were no notices about photography. No “no recording” symbols. No policies posted. No vague warnings about “security concerns.” Nothing.

That matters more than people realize. In public spaces, especially government spaces, restrictions aren’t assumed. They have to be stated. Clearly.

The Confrontation Starts Immediately

The moment I walked through the front door, I was met by a security guard stationed just inside the lobby. His name is Jack Martinez. He was in uniform, visibly armed, and positioned in a way that made it clear he was meant to be the first point of contact.

I was already recording when I entered. One camera mounted to my chest. Another in my hand. No attempt to hide it. No attempt to be sneaky.

Jack noticed instantly.

What started as a brief interaction turned tense almost immediately. His demeanor changed the moment it became clear I wasn’t there to quietly sit down and wait without asking questions.

Instead of explaining a policy or asking what I needed, he began issuing commands.

“Stand right there.”

No explanation. No courtesy. No effort to de-escalate.

Just commands.

When Commands Replace Communication

There’s a noticeable difference between someone doing their job and someone reacting emotionally. You can usually hear it in the tone.

Jack wasn’t trying to inform me of anything. He wasn’t trying to clarify what was allowed or not allowed. He was trying to control the situation.

As the interaction continued, the language escalated.

He threatened to trespass me. He threatened to charge me. At one point, he threatened to “lock me up.”

Those aren’t small statements. They aren’t misunderstandings. They are explicit assertions of arrest authority.

And yet, not once did he explain how recording in a public lobby violated any law. Not once did he cite a policy. Not once did he reference a statute or regulation.

The threats were loud. The legal foundation was nonexistent.

The “Retired Police Officer” Card

At the peak of the confrontation, Jack made a point to say that he was a retired police officer.

That statement wasn’t made casually. It wasn’t part of a conversation about his background. It was clearly intended to establish dominance, to suggest that his authority extended beyond his role as a contracted security guard.

But here’s the thing.

Being a retired police officer doesn’t grant arrest authority. It doesn’t create special powers. And it certainly doesn’t override constitutional protections in a public government lobby.

Authority doesn’t follow you into retirement.

And it doesn’t magically appear because someone claims it does.

Staff Step In, Reality Creeps Back

As the situation unfolded, WIC staff began to intervene. A supervisor named Alyssa, along with at least two other employees, addressed what was happening.

This is where the narrative changed.

Staff confirmed that:

• The lobby was open to the public

• Recording was allowed

• There was no policy prohibiting filming in that space

In other words, everything Jack had been objecting to was perfectly lawful.

At that point, there should have been a reset. A simple acknowledgment. A step back.

Instead, while Jack did not escalate further physically, the verbal tension lingered. The threats stopped growing, but the attitude didn’t fully shift.

It wasn’t about the rules anymore. It was about pride.

No Arrest, No Trespass, No Police

Despite all the talk of arrest and trespassing, none of it happened.

I was never detained. My equipment was never touched. No police officers were called. No paperwork was produced. No supervisor ordered me to leave.

That outcome speaks louder than the threats ever did.

When someone truly has authority on their side, they don’t need to bluff. They don’t need to posture. They simply act within the law.

Here, the law was on my side, and the confrontation quietly fizzled once that reality became unavoidable.

Armed Security and the Illusion of Authority

Encounters like this raise a bigger issue that shows up again and again in public buildings.

Armed security guards often operate in a gray area. They wear uniforms. They carry firearms. They’re placed in government spaces. And to the average person, that looks a lot like law enforcement.

But looks aren’t law.

Security guards, even armed ones, do not have the same authority as police officers. Their role is limited. Observe. Deter. Report.

They do not get to invent rules. They do not get to override constitutional rights. And they do not get to threaten arrest for lawful activity.

A badge, a uniform, or a holstered firearm does not expand legal authority.

Why Filming Matters

It would be easy to brush this off as one bad interaction. But that misses the point.

Most people would have stopped recording the moment the threats started. Not because they were wrong, but because the situation felt uncomfortable, intimidating, or not worth the hassle.

That’s exactly why documenting these encounters matters.

Not to provoke. Not to embarrass. But to create an objective record of how authority is exercised when someone thinks no one is watching.

When cameras are rolling, the truth has a way of surfacing.

Leaving by Choice, Not Force

Eventually, I chose to leave. Not because I was required to. Not because I was trespassed. But because the interaction had run its course and the point had been made.

No one stopped me. No one followed me. Jack said nothing as I exited.

Once back in the car, it was clear the situation was over.

The Pattern Is the Point

This wasn’t a fluke. It fits a pattern that plays out across the country.

Someone records in a public space.

Someone in a position of perceived authority objects.

Threats are made.

No law is cited.

Supervisors intervene.

The threats disappear.

The only difference from one location to another is how long it takes for reality to catch up.

Accountability Starts With Visibility

This video, and this post, aren’t about personal attacks. They’re about accountability.

Government agencies have a responsibility to ensure that their employees and contractors understand the limits of their authority. When that training fails, the public pays the price.

Visibility is often the only corrective.

Recording in public isn’t a crime.

Discomfort doesn’t override the Constitution.

And authority doesn’t exist just because someone says it does.

If nothing else, this encounter is a reminder of how important it is to know your rights and to document when they’re challenged.

The Customer’s Call

This one was almost sad. The customer’s voice was frantic. She said she was “afraid” and kept repeating that what I was doing was “so strange.” She even admitted she filmed me with her own phone. Her fear was real — but fear doesn’t make filming illegal.

When you walk up to Coral Springs City Hall, it’s hard to miss the massive sun sculpture out front. Painted bright orange and yellow, it beams like Florida sunshine, welcoming everyone who steps inside. Etched on the inside of the sculpture are the words: “Everything Under the Sun.”

That’s Coral Springs’ motto, and it couldn’t have been a more fitting way to open this audit. Because when we’re talking about the First Amendment — the right to speak, record, and hold government accountable — we’re really talking about everything under the sun.

This was meant to be one big video covering Coral Springs City Hall, the police department, the local post offices, and the Northwest Regional Library. But as these things often go, the day’s events reshaped the project. The library footage had enough drama to earn its own release (and if you haven’t seen it yet, you can catch that here). The post office interactions — which include police being called and 911 audio where callers lied — will be next week’s feature.

Today’s story is all about City Hall and the Police Department — two sides of Coral Springs government that, as it turns out, set the bar high for professionalism and transparency.

Checking In at City Hall

The main entrance of Coral Springs City Hall feels more like a corporate lobby than a government office. Off to the left sits a security station manned by an Allied guard. A lot of auditors will tell you Allied Security has a reputation for mishandling First Amendment situations. But this guy? He was polite and professional from the start.

I asked where the building department was, and he told me to head to the “One Stop Shop” through the next door. He even buzzed me in.

Inside, I found myself standing in front of a kiosk that immediately asked for my phone number. That’s where my radar went up. Why should I have to hand over personal info just to access public services? I wasn’t about to feed my data into another system that could open me up to more spam calls.

Instead, I approached the desk, where I met Ashley. She asked my name and what I needed. I explained I wanted records on how many solar permits had been approved in 2025. Before long, an older staff member joined in. She asked clarifying questions — did I only want approvals, or applications too? Residential or commercial? She wasn’t defensive about the camera; she just genuinely wanted to make sure I got the right info.

When I clarified I only wanted approved residential solar permits for 2025, she assured me they could run a report. She even joked that to get the records, they’d need my driver’s license and DNA. We all laughed — it was the kind of good-natured professionalism you hope for in public service.

Ashley handled the request, double-checked the details, and confirmed I could leave my email instead of a phone number. She even made light of being on camera, asking if she looked okay. I told her the viewers were more concerned with how well she did her job than how she looked doing it.

That’s how public service should work: approachable, professional, and transparent.

Same-Day Records

Before I even left the parking lot, I pulled out my phone to check some footage — and there it was. An email from the city with my first records response.

1,305 active employees.

The very same day, I also received the full report of 2025 solar permits. If you’ve ever filed a public records request, you know how rare that is. Too often, governments drag their feet, overcomplicate the process, or try to intimidate requesters. Coral Springs, on the other hand, delivered same-day transparency. That deserves recognition.

Meeting the Deputy City Clerk

Before leaving City Hall, I circled back to the Allied guard and asked about seeing the city clerk. He asked what I needed, and I explained it was for another records request. Right at that moment, a woman called in on the video phone — clearly complaining about me recording.

The guard didn’t flinch. He told her flat-out that I had a right to film in the building. For an Allied guard to stand firm like that is worth noting. I even told him how much I appreciated the way he handled it.

A few minutes later, Deputy City Clerk Aaron came down to meet me. I asked how many employees the city had (which, unbeknownst to me, I’d already gotten the answer to). He explained that requests like that get entered into the city’s JustFOIA system, where I could track progress. I also asked about the immaculate landscaping outside — whether it was done by city employees or contracted out. He said mostly city workers, though sometimes vendors help.

Aaron was polite, professional, and efficient. Nothing more, nothing less.

Walking out of City Hall, I told the camera how smooth the entire process had been. And it really was.

Coral Springs Police Department

Next stop: the Coral Springs Police Department.

Out front, a bronze statue shows a police officer and firefighter with two children between them. Just to the right is a memorial garden for fallen officers. I cracked a quick joke about bronze prices being up but not worth stealing the statue, then made my way inside.

At the front desk, a young woman asked how she could help. I told her I wanted to file a public records request. She asked if I had a case number — I didn’t. She asked what it was related to, and that’s when I told her:

I had noticed an award in their trophy case for February 14, 2018 — the day of the Parkland school shooting.

Remembering Parkland

For context: Coral Springs is right next to Parkland, home of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. On Valentine’s Day 2018, 17 students and staff members were murdered in one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

As shots rang out and children bled on the floor, deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office — the agency tasked with protecting the school — stayed outside. They didn’t go in. That’s how BSO earned the infamous nickname: “The Cowards of Broward.”

Coral Springs officers, on the other hand, ran in. They passed those hiding deputies and entered the building ready to confront the shooter.

That’s what the award in the trophy case recognized. The inscription read:

“This award is presented to the Coral Springs Police Department in recognition of your agency personnel’s decisive actions and heroic efforts on February 14, 2018, when responding to an active shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Your courageous and brave actions were instrumental in saving precious lives.”

I told the clerk that my request was for the names and email addresses of the officers who went in that day. She seemed a little uncertain, but she pulled out a notepad and began writing it down.

Filing the Requests

She explained that the main reports were with BSO, but that Coral Springs had supplemental records. Either way, their records department would handle the request. She asked for my email, which I dictated while she wrote it down.

Before leaving, I added one more request: the police blotter from the previous Sunday. She made a note of that too, confirmed everything would be submitted, and told me they’d get back to me.

I thanked her for her time and left the building.

Outside, I reflected on camera: no matter where you live in the U.S., you’ve heard of the Valentine’s Day massacre. And whatever you think of law enforcement, you have to respect the fact that Coral Springs PD ran into that school when others didn’t.

Reflection

This Coral Springs audit was unlike many others I’ve done.

At City Hall, I was met with professionalism, good humor, and transparency — including same-day records responses. At the police department, I filed sensitive requests tied to one of the darkest days in Florida history, and the staff still treated me respectfully.

That’s how government should work. Not with hostility. Not with barriers. But with accountability, professionalism, and openness.

Remembering 9/11 in Coral Springs

Before heading inside, I took some time at the September 11, 2001 memorial that sits just outside the entrance.

This isn’t just any plaque in the ground. At its center is an authentic piece of steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. After 9/11, thousands of pieces of steel were stored at JFK Airport, and in the years that followed, communities around the country applied to receive them for local memorials. Coral Springs was granted one of those pieces on October 18, 2002. By September 11, 2004, it was permanently placed at the library, surrounded by a modest but powerful memorial.

The plaque reminds visitors: “Let us never forget the innocent victims who died or were injured on that day.”

I read the words aloud on camera, pausing to let the weight of it sink in. Just as I finished, a squirrel darted into frame with a peanut in its mouth. I couldn’t resist joking that the squirrel was just trying to get a nut, and I was just trying to get a video. The juxtaposition felt oddly fitting — life goes on, even in the shadow of tragedy, and sometimes you need a moment of levity.

Words from Dr. King

Moving closer to the library’s front doors, I passed another monument — this one honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was etched with some of his most enduring quotes:

• “The time is always right to do what is right.”

• “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

• “Courage faces fear and thereby masters it.”

Reading those words before stepping inside was a reminder that civic spaces like libraries are meant to embody those ideals. They’re open to all, funded by the public, and grounded in principles of equality and access.

First Impressions Inside

It had just finished raining, and the pavement was still wet as I stepped toward the entrance. Just beside the doors was a plaque marking the building’s opening in February 2001 — just months before the world would change forever that September.

Inside, I filmed some of the artwork on display. The standout was a towering bronze-colored sculpture stretching two stories tall, inscribed with a scroll of text in English and what looked like abstract letters. Like much public art, it was open to interpretation, but it gave the lobby a sense of grandeur.

Further inside, I noticed signage in multiple languages — a reflection of Coral Springs’ diverse population, which includes large Hispanic, Brazilian, and Caribbean communities. Libraries in Broward County often serve as cultural hubs, not just book depositories, so it made sense to see information presented in different tongues.

At the front desk, I filmed a sign advertising the Instant Library Card program. The young woman working there explained that anyone can get a card — free for Broward residents, $38 annually for non-residents. It struck me as a smart way to make the library accessible even for folks outside the county, whether snowbirds, students, or frequent visitors.

Upstairs Encounters

Skipping the youth services area (I don’t film minors), I took the stairs to the second floor. At an information desk, two staff members were adjusting a bracelet. One of them smiled warmly at me and asked if I needed help. I told her she already had — her smile had lit up the room. She laughed, which gave the moment a nice human touch.

From there, I circled the perimeter where study rooms line the walls. Most people ignored me, but one young woman clearly noticed the camera. She raised her hand to block her face. Amused, I did the old “I’m squishing your head” gag with my fingers, then walked away.

That’s when things escalated.

The “Snitching” Debate

Moments later, the same woman came out of her study room and asked me to stop recording. I declined and suggested she return to studying. Instead, she marched to the information desk, phone in hand, to complain.

I even told my viewers, “I think she’s gonna go snitch.”

At the desk, there was also a man nearby. At the time, I didn’t know what role he played — he was just there while she was talking to staff. A few minutes later, I noticed him at one of the public computers, and that’s when I saw him point me out to the security guard.

Curious, I approached him to ask why. He admitted he’d done it so the guard wouldn’t have to walk around looking for me, but he added that he didn’t think I was doing anything wrong so long as I wasn’t filming kids. He even showed me an email he’d sent to the library director with photos of people sleeping in the building, explaining how staff weren’t equipped to handle mentally ill patrons. We wrapped up our conversation on that note, and I thanked him for sharing his perspective.

As I turned to head back toward the study room area, I noticed security and another staff member talking with the woman who had originally complained about me. Naturally, I wanted to capture what was being said, so I made my way over to join the conversation.

Tattling, Snitching, and Third Grade

That’s when the young woman doubled down. She claimed she had a “right not to be filmed,” insisted the camera made her uncomfortable, and even tried to argue that being a woman should grant her special protection. I reminded her bluntly that I wasn’t there to provide comfort — “I didn’t bring any pillows.”

When she said I didn’t care about other human beings, I corrected her: it’s not about lacking care for people, it’s about not sacrificing constitutional rights because someone feels uncomfortable.

From there, the discussion spiraled into what I’d call playground semantics. She didn’t like me saying she was “telling” or “snitching,” and she snapped back that she was simply “informing” on me. I pointed out that it really doesn’t matter what word you choose — telling, tattling, snitching, informing — it’s all the same thing. She rolled her eyes and shot back that my language sounded like I was stuck in third grade.

I reminded her I wasn’t the one running to the teacher.

At that point, even the staff member at the desk gently reminded her that this was a public space, and she couldn’t make me leave.

Education in Real Time

The exchange went in circles: she argued about feelings, I pointed to rights. She asked about the purpose of my video, and I explained again: it’s to educate the public about their rights to record in public spaces.

She wasn’t happy about it, but by inserting herself into the situation, she had become the most interesting part of an otherwise routine audit. I gave her my business card, explaining she could use my website if she wanted to opt out later.

Wrapping Up

Heading out, I passed a Muslim woman in traditional clothing. She walked by without incident. The irony wasn’t lost on me — unlike a previous audit where someone invoked religion to try to stop me from recording, here was someone of faith who understood that public spaces are just that: public.

About the Library

The Northwest Regional Library is part of the Broward County Library system, one of the largest in the country with more than 30 branches. Opened in 2001, it quickly became a community anchor for northwest Broward County, offering not just books but free internet, cultural programs, and spaces for civic engagement.

Broward libraries are also known for their public art collections — everything from sculptures to murals commissioned through the county’s Art in Public Places program. The bronze scroll sculpture I filmed is part of that effort to integrate art into everyday spaces.

About the 9/11 Steel Program

After 9/11, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stored over 1,800 pieces of steel recovered from Ground Zero. In 2009, they began distributing them to communities across the U.S. that applied, usually for use in memorials. Coral Springs was among those selected. Today, these relics stand in fire stations, city halls, and libraries nationwide — silent reminders of loss, resilience, and unity.

Final Thoughts

What began as a quiet visit to a suburban library ended up showcasing the tension between personal comfort and public rights. The MLK quotes outside remind us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere — and that includes injustice against the First Amendment.

This audit wasn’t about picking a fight. It was about documenting how the public reacts when someone exercises their right to record. Sometimes you get warm smiles, sometimes you get pushback, and sometimes you get a squirrel with a peanut.

Either way, the lesson is the same: rights don’t vanish just because they make someone uncomfortable.

Drunk Woman Explodes on Me Over Filming in Public — Drops Bomb Threats

When you’re a journalist with a camera in your hand, you never really know what the day is going to bring. Sometimes it’s peaceful — you capture architecture, a few street shots, maybe exchange a polite word or two. Other times, the camera seems to act like a magnet for chaos. My latest trip to Deerfield Beach was a perfect example of that.

This wasn’t just another audit. It was a journey that started with the quiet stacks of the Percy White Library, moved into the salty air of the beach where I met an unforgettable character, and ended at Deerfield Beach City Hall with a reminder of why I do this work in the first place.

Buckle up. This one has it all: libraries, sand, city officials, and a drunken woman who thought yelling about bombs was a winning argument against the First Amendment.

Chapter 1: Starting at the Percy White Library

If you’ve never been to the Percy White Library, it’s tucked right into the heart of Deerfield Beach as part of the Broward County Public Library system. Named after Percy White, a long-time community leader who believed in access to knowledge for everyone, it’s the kind of building you walk into and instantly feel the weight of public purpose.

That’s where I began the day — not with drama, but with curiosity. Libraries are government buildings, and as such, they’re public spaces where the First Amendment is alive and well. I walked in, camera rolling, checking out the space and making small observations. People were reading, staff were busy helping patrons, and there was a calm atmosphere that reminded me why public institutions matter.

I didn’t encounter hostility there. Nobody told me to shut the camera off. No one screamed about privacy. Instead, it was a subtle but important reminder: sometimes government gets it right.

But I didn’t come to Deerfield Beach just to quietly film library shelves. The day had more in store.

Cuffed, Stuffed, Searched — and She Deleted My Video

What started with a camera-shy postal worker turned into a public meltdown, a pair of handcuffs, a search, and a mysteriously deleted video. But lucky for me — and for you — my DJI mic kept rolling.

This one escalated fast.

I rolled up to the USPS in Hutchinson Beach, ready to do what I always do — film from a public space and see if government employees remember what the First Amendment is. Spoiler alert: they didn’t.

Duck and Cover: Postal Edition

The moment I walked in, the postal worker was already in hiding. No joke — he was in the backroom and had no plans of coming out. He peeked out long enough to ask why I was filming, and I explained — respectfully — that I was a journalist gathering content for a story.

He didn’t argue. He didn’t demand I stop. But he also didn’t help the line of customers forming in the lobby.

There were never more than two people waiting, but with no clerk at the counter, tensions simmered. People wanted service, and the employee made it clear he wasn’t coming out while I was recording.

That’s what lit the fuse.

“Do You Feel Threatened, Little Man?”

The old lady in line had enough. She took it upon herself to be the voice of the post office lobby.

No phone. No badge. Just a big voice and bigger outrage.

She confronted me head-on — verbally, not physically — with full boomer energy. Loud. Red-faced. Righteous. She accused me of being a threat, an instigator, and everything short of a national security risk.

And at one point she actually barked: “Do you feel threatened, little man?”

I didn’t. But I was definitely entertained.

She pressured the clerk to call the police — though to be fair, he was already doing so.

Enter Deputy Walker

Enter Deputy Britnee Walker from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived on scene like she’d just fast-forwarded through the Constitution.

She told me to leave. I tried to explain. I referenced Poster 7 — the rulebook for filming in federal buildings that hangs in every post office lobby. She didn’t care.

She claimed I was obstructing operations, despite the fact that I was just standing there with a camera while the clerk refused to work. 

She asked for my ID. I told her I would not provide it unless she could articulate a crime. That’s the standard under Terry v. Ohio, and it’s also common sense. No crime, no ID. She didn’t like that either.

She then stood in the doorway and told me to come outside and talk to her. She repeated this a few times. I didn’t want to talk to her, and I didn’t feel I had any legal obligation to do so. I even asked her what would happen if I didn’t comply — trying to preserve my legal standing — but she wouldn’t give me a straight answer or make any clear threat of arrest.

Instead, she came back inside, grabbed me, and forced me outside, where she cuffed me and placed me in her patrol car.

Cuffs. Patrol car. Detained.

My Camera Was Still Rolling — Until It Wasn’t

As she handcuffed me on the sidewalk, my phone got knocked off the gimbal. It hit the ground — hard — but kept recording like a champ. Until Deputy Walker picked it up… and manually stopped the video. Intentional? Accidental? We’ll probably never know. But you tell me — does that sound like an innocent move? What she didn’t realize was that my DJI microphones were still recording. And they caught everything.

A Search Without a Warrant

While I sat in the back of the patrol car in handcuffs, Deputy Walker searched my bag.

Let’s get this straight:

• I was never told I was under arrest.

• I was never read my Miranda rights.

• I made it clear that I did not consent to any search.

Still, she rummaged through my belongings.

Was that a violation of my Fourth Amendment rights? That’s a question I’m still asking.

And let’s not forget: I was in cuffs for well over an hour. The full audio runs more than two hours, and the detention itself spanned a significant chunk of that time. That’s a long time to be held with no formal arrest and no clear justification.

Heat, Handcuffs, and EMS

The Florida sun turned the back seat of that patrol car into a sauna. I started feeling faint and asked for medical attention. EMS responded, and to take my vitals, they had me moved to a bench outside the post office. I was still in cuffs. Still under detention. Just now part of the public art installation. A few onlookers passed by — some curious, some confused — and I just sat there sweating, cuffed, and wondering what exactly I was being detained for.

Cooler Heads on the Bench

On that bench, I got a chance to talk with Deputies Eva Macia and James Grecco. The tone shifted. Grecco was professional and chill. He mentioned he knew about First Amendment audits and even asked about my channel. I told him what I was doing, why I was filming, and we actually had a respectful conversation — a refreshing change from the escalation that started all this.

Toward the end of the encounter, I overheard Deputy Walker debating whether or not she had legal standing to hold me for obstruction. That’s when she finally decided to let me go.

No charges. No arrest. No paperwork. Just a silent release back into the wild with a trespass warning.

Deleted… or Just Hidden?

I got back in my car and opened the Photos app to check the footage. Gone. Not glitched. Not misplaced. Just gone. I panicked for a second — then checked the “Recently Deleted” folder. There it was. Did Deputy Walker delete the video on purpose? Did she think stopping the recording would erase the evidence?

We’ll probably never know — but you can decide for yourself.

She said she had probable cause for obstruction. I respectfully disagree. I believe I was unlawfully detained. I believe my property was unlawfully searched. And I believe my rights were violated.

That said… I’m not blind to the fact that this could’ve ended much worse.

She could’ve arrested me. Booked me. Taken me to the St. Lucie County Jail — aka The Rock. And I could’ve been stuck fighting my fourth criminal trial in court.

Instead, she let me go. So Deputy Walker — if you’re reading this — thank you for showing grace. I don’t agree with your legal judgment, but I do appreciate your choice not to escalate further. And I’m going to pay that grace forward. Next time I deal with a cop trying to do their job, I’ll try to match the restraint you showed me at the end.

When I walked into the Broward County Courthouse, I did what I always do: I pressed record.

My purpose that day was simple — to follow up on a prior incident at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where a JetBlue customer named Sean had shoved me in the chest after threatening to destroy my camera. Deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office were on scene and witnessed the entire thing, but they refused to take a report or identify themselves. I called the BSO non-emergency line, and that’s when Deputy G. Aluc showed up. He reviewed the footage, took my statement, and called a supervisor. He did what the original officers wouldn’t. And thanks to that, I was able to begin the process of pursuing criminal charges.

That’s what brought me to the courthouse.

As I stepped out of the elevator and into the hallway, my camera was already rolling. I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t disrupt any proceedings. I was peacefully documenting my visit, just like I’ve done in countless other government buildings across the state.

Within seconds of entering the public lobby for the State Attorney, I was confronted by a woman named Lina Duarte, the receptionist for the State Attorney’s Office. She immediately challenged my presence with the camera and told me I had two options: stop recording, or she would call BSO. I calmly told her to go ahead and call BSO.

Deputies Donna Wisecarver and Quynterra Wright were the first to arrive — not with lights blazing or sirens wailing, but with that unmistakable energy of “let’s see what this guy’s problem is.” They asked to speak with me in the hallway, and I made the rookie mistake of agreeing. I stepped out, camera still rolling, fully expecting a quick chat. Instead, I got a mini interrogation.

Wisecarver started probing, asking what my business was in the building. I gave her the polite version of “none of your business,” explaining I didn’t owe her an explanation and that I intended to speak for myself — to the State Attorney’s Office, not to a deputy playing gatekeeper.

But she pressed on, insisting the staff were uncomfortable. That’s when I reminded her: comfort isn’t her job — the Constitution is. And just to be extra clear, I told her I was there to document the process of filing a criminal complaint and that I was well within my rights to be in the public lobby of a public building.

Wisecarver decided to go check in with the staff. I tried to follow her back into the lobby — which, again, was open to the public — but she and Wright formed a human barricade. That’s when Castello arrived, with all the swagger of someone ready to drop a line from a rulebook. She told me I wasn’t allowed back in. I asked if I was being detained or if I was free to go. We did the verbal tango for a bit until she finally admitted: I was free to go — just not free to go in. Huh?

Wright went into the lobby to confer with staff, leaving me out in the hallway with Castello and Wisecarver posted up like bouncers outside a club. I repeated — calmly but firmly — that they had no legal right to keep me out. No crime. No trespass. No lawful order. Still, they held the line.

Next, Wisecarver pulled a disappearing act into the employee-only entrance. Wright came out of the public lobby, and Castello stayed glued to her post. I explained again that I didn’t owe anyone an explanation and that Castello was standing between me and a constitutionally protected activity.

Wright tried to play messenger, relaying what the staff supposedly said about how I could move forward with my criminal complaint. But she doesn’t work for the State Attorney’s Office, and I told her so — repeatedly. I asked her to move. She didn’t. She went back in. Castello stayed put.

So, I decided to escalate — the legal way. I told Castello I wanted to file a formal complaint and asked for her badge number and email. To her credit, she gave them to me without issue.

Deputy A. Castillo rolled up next, posted near the door like backup muscle — didn’t say a word, didn’t have to. His presence was loud enough. Meanwhile, Castello and Wright were still running interference like they were guarding the crown jewels. I’d had enough of the lobby lockdown and asked for a supervisor.

Enter Wisecarver, once again. She popped back into the hallway and asked if I’d gotten the forms — like we were in a DMV line and this was all a paperwork issue. I let her know, respectfully, that I didn’t need anything from her. My business was with the State Attorney’s Office, and I intended to handle it directly.

That apparently hurt some feelings, because next came the lecture. According to Wisecarver, I wasn’t listening to her. According to me, she didn’t have anything worth hearing. I hadn’t broken any laws, and she had no authority over me. But still, she kept pushing, insisting I stop interrupting her so she could explain — well, nothing that mattered.

Just when it looked like we’d be stuck in an endless loop of “listen to me” vs. “you’re not my boss,” Deputy Andre Crosby stepped in like he was ready to wrap the whole thing up with some unlawful ejection. “Want me to escort him out?” he offered. Cool-headed, right?

But Wisecarver threw on the brakes. “Not yet,” she told him — apparently they were still waiting on a supervisor to greenlight the violation of my rights.

I called it out for what it was. “You’re all acting like goons,” I said. Castello didn’t like that and accused me of being rude — and for the record, she claimed I insulted Wright’s eyelashes. Yes, really. Wright’s eyelashes became a subject of legal importance in a First Amendment audit. My response? “Protected speech.”

Crosby made another move, trying to get me into the elevator like I was being gently evicted. I stood my ground and said I wasn’t going unless I was under threat of arrest. But before they could escalate further — cue the unexpected voice of reason.

It started out as a creative mission to help my dog. It turned into a sidewalk standoff, a 911 call, and one of the most respectful police responses I’ve experienced to date. Let me walk you through how things unfolded outside Jan’s Jewelers in Boynton Beach.

This wasn’t just about flexing rights — this was personal.

“You Got Me on Camera?”

My first interaction of the day came from the doorway of Phat Heads Barbershop, one of three businesses inside the plaza at 515 N Federal Hwy. A woman popped her head out and asked if I had her on camera. I told her I did.

Naturally, she was curious. So I told her the truth: I was just trying to help my dog.

That caught her off guard — there was no dog in sight. So I explained that my dog, Chi Chi, had been the victim of a hit-and-run and I was out here doing something a little outside the box to raise awareness and support for her recovery. The conversation never turned hostile. In fact, she wished me luck, and I wished her luck cutting hair. A rare and refreshing moment of mutual respect.

The Jeweler Wasn’t Having It

Next door, at Jan’s Jewelers, things played out a bit differently.

The jeweler stepped out wearing one of those magnifying headband visors that jewelers use to get up close with the details. Before he could even say anything, I pointed out his gear — let’s just say it made for an interesting look.

He asked what I was doing. I flipped it: “What are you doing?” He seemed genuinely unsure how to respond. I told him I was just trying to help my dog, and from there, confusion kicked in hard.

That’s when the familiar line came out: “You can’t film a jewelry store.”

I asked why not. He didn’t answer. He just said he was going to call the police and walked back inside. Before he closed the door, I let him know that if he called, they’d just bring more cameras — but he didn’t hear the full sentence. So I finished it for myself anyway: “…you’ll just make the video more interesting.”

Through the glass, we had a brief back-and-forth. He insisted I couldn’t point a camera at a jewelry store. I pointed out I was standing on a public sidewalk. He told me I wasn’t the police. I asked if that meant it would be okay if I was. No answer — just a phone call.

I didn’t hear what he said at the time, but I later obtained the 911 call through a public records request. He told the dispatcher there was a guy outside recording, “saying something about a dog,” and that it was freaking him out.

Then the Cavalry Arrived

A few minutes later, three officers from Boynton Beach PD rolled up. Before they even reached me, a man from the barbershop stepped outside to ask what I was doing. I tried to explain, but he was more interested in telling me where I should be filming. He didn’t like that I was out front. I told him it was a public sidewalk.

The first officer approached — fist bump. No demands. No barked questions. Just a calm greeting and a walk toward the jewelry store to get the other side of the story.

Soon, the other two officers approached as well — both gave me fist bumps, and the vibe remained chill.

We talked. I explained what I was doing. They didn’t try to intimidate me, didn’t demand ID, didn’t question my right to be there. One of them asked about my dog, and I told him what had happened to Chi Chi. That led to a conversation about how I make content in public spaces as a way to generate revenue and share stories that matter.

Coffee, the Constitution, and the Army

Meanwhile, back inside the jewelry store, something had clearly changed. The officer who initially spoke with the jeweler reappeared. The store’s hurricane shutters started closing. I called out, asking if the officer had “squared him away.” No answer.

But the store was shuttered, and that silence said plenty.

The final officer I spoke with — the one who had asked about Chi Chi — told me directly: “You’re not doing anything wrong.” That’s what I like to hear. I thanked him and his fellow officers for honoring their oaths and respecting my rights. I told them they handled the call perfectly and that I appreciated not being hassled for ID or told to move along.

They didn’t just walk away — they walked off like they had nothing to hide and everything to be proud of.

It was, without exaggeration, a walk of honor.

Final Thoughts

Not every audit ends in conflict. Sometimes, people come out swinging (verbally), and sometimes they come out curious. This one had a bit of everything — confusion, confrontation, and finally, calm.

But at its core, it wasn’t about a jeweler or a barbershop or a sidewalk.

It was about Chi Chi.

This was my way of doing something that might make a difference. And thanks to the professionalism of the officers involved, it became a moment worth documenting — not just for me, but for anyone who cares about free speech, accountability, or one seriously resilient little dog.

You know that feeling when you head out for a routine First Amendment audit, expecting the usual sideways glances, maybe a Karen or two, and instead you accidentally uncover a dealership with enough online accusations to fill a Netflix docuseries? Yeah, that was my Friday.

A Calm Start at Dave’s South End Service Center

The day kicked off nice and easy at Dave’s South End Service Center on South Dixie Highway. A guy glanced up from working on a car, asked me what I was doing, and I gave him my standard response: “Making an educational video.” He didn’t flip out. He made a phone call, handed his phone to a buddy, and that was about it. A rare calm encounter. Honestly, I thought, “Well, this might be a boring one.” Spoiler alert: It wasn’t.

Quique’s Tires: The Surveillance Speaker Comedy Hour

Across the street, Quique’s Tires decided to have a little fun. They noticed me filming from the sidewalk and instead of coming out, they fired up the ol’ surveillance speaker system and started chanting through the loudspeaker: “Smile, you’re being recorded too!” Over and over. I mean, props for creativity? I smiled. I was, in fact, already being recorded. We all were. After a few minutes of that comedy routine, they quietly closed up shop. Again, no drama. Yet.

Northwood Road: A Rare Breed of Normal Adults

Since Dixie Highway wasn’t giving me much to work with, I phoned my buddy Agustin who pointed me toward Northwood Road where a street event was happening. It was like stepping into an alternate universe where people act… normal. Vendors lined the sidewalks, live music played, dogs strolled by with their owners, people dined outside—and nobody cared that I was filming.

I met Andrea from The Space Connect West Palm, a coworking space offering podcast rooms, a cafe, and, surprisingly, zero hostility toward a guy with a camera. She let me spin a prize wheel (I won a free day pass, thank you very much) and she even scanned my press pass to check out my site. That’s how you do public relations, folks.

The Mandel Public Library had a table there too. Long-time viewers will recall they previously trespassed me from the library for daring to film in public. This time, though? Friendly faces offering me free seeds from their Seed Library program. Apparently, flowers don’t mind being filmed.

Brothers Auto Shop: Jackpot

Not yet satisfied that I’d given you enough content, I went back out the following Monday. My first stop? Brothers Auto Shop at 1502 N Dixie Hwy.Now this wasn’t a planed stop, so I didn’t know what to expect. Later that night, when I looked them up, I realized I might’ve stumbled into one of Lake Worth’s most sketchy operations—based solely on their own Google reviews.

They’re rocking a proud 1.4-star rating, with multiple accusations that make you question how they still have a business license. Let’s sample the hits:

• Nicole Heath: “After purchasing a vehicle, 2 days later it broke down and they tampered with the odometer.”

• Alberto Hernandez: “Car advertised at 127k miles. Carfax shows 190k miles.”

• Briyant Tripp: “Worst place to buy a vehicle. It’ll break down the next day.”

• Levsaa: “They lie, won’t give you your title, and don’t answer calls.”

• Ronald David: “Sells junk cars and doesn’t return money. BEWARE.”

That’s not a review page—that’s a rap sheet.

So there I am on the sidewalk, filming peacefully, when two guys in an SUV back out of the lot and immediately laser-lock on me. The driver asks if I need help. I pretend not to hear him, flip it back: “Do you need help?” The back-and-forth begins.

Driver: “You’re taking video. What do you need?” Me: “I could use some water.”

He didn’t find that funny. They hover for a bit, then one threatens to call the cops. I told him, respectfully, that it would be a waste of everyone’s time. But he calls anyway.

Since the passenger was filming me too, I figured we’d have some fun: “If you both film me at the same time, we can make it a 3-way—never done that before.”

While they made their call, I kept filming the lot—noticing multiple cars parked on the street with no plates, one with a temp tag, and one lonely vehicle with an actual plate. No police ever showed while I was there. So I moved on.

Gonz Auto Collision: Bonus Round

A little further down Dixie, I stopped at Gonz Auto Collision Center. I started walking down the public sidewalk with my monopod raised above the fence to get a better view of the property behind the fence. Within seconds a worker came out, asking the usual: “Can I help you?” He then said he was trying to understand why I was filming. I flipped it back on him with, “I’m just trying to understand why you’re asking.”

We actually ended up having a pretty polite exchange. He wanted to know why I was filming, and I said I was trying to help my dog but wouldn’t elaborate further. He asked who I worked for and I told him myself which led to him mentioning how he respected entrepreneurship. He wished me luck with my dog, and walked off. Seemed like we were done.

But a few minutes later, he returned—this time driving a truck with a passenger. The passenger got out, approached me, and pulled out his phone to start recording. I have no problem with people filming me (obviously), but at one point he positioned his phone right up in my face, which I politely called out. “See how I’m keeping my distance? You can film, just be respectful and do the same.” He didn’t argue, handed the phone back to the driver, and walked off.

Not long after, two PBSO deputies showed up across the street, parked, and simply observed. No approach, no confrontation, no attempt to interfere with my filming. For once — perfect policing.

Another individual nearby waved me off and said not to film him, but kept his distance. With no further excitement, I wrapped up and moved on.

This audit started out slow but ended up delivering a perfect lesson on why filming in public matters. Had I not been there with a camera, I would’ve never uncovered a dealership with multiple public accusations of odometer fraud, title problems, and mechanical failures.
